BACKGROUND

Why does Calgary need this program?

1 in 7 Calgary households struggle to pay their utility bills, forcing some homeowners and renters to choose between heating their homes and buying groceries or other necessities. This is known as energy inequity. Energy inequity impacts some people more than others, especially low-income households, racialized groups, renters, seniors, Indigenous people, and lone parents.

This program is developed in alignment with Calgary’s Energy Equity Strategy, which aims to help Calgarians affordably heat, cool, and power their homes. By addressing these challenges, the program seeks to ensure that all residents can live comfortably without compromising their essential needs.

Currently, 1 in 7 households in Calgary are struggling to pay utility bills, forcing  homeowners and renters to make tradeoffs between heating their home and buying groceries or other necessities.
