Am I income eligible?
The Home Upgrades and RetroKit streams are open to both homeowners and renters. Eligibility for the Home Upgrades and RetroKits are based on the number of people living in the household and the total household income (including income from anyone 18 or older who lives in the home).
How do I determine if my household is eligible?
When we talk about household income, we mean the income of a single family or an individual who lives independently in a home. This includes people who manage their own money and living arrangements, even if they share the home with others.
Sometimes, a house has more than one household — like when two separate families or two roommates live in the same house and do not share expenses or finances. In that case, each household is looked at separately for income eligibility.
A multi-generational or extended family all living together — where many family members share expenses and support each other financially — is considered one household, and their combined income is used to check eligibility.
What if I’m a landlord living in the same house as renters?
If you are a landlord living in the house alongside renters, you may be eligible for the Home Upgrades Program. Your rental income must be added to your total household income to determine if you meet the income requirements, and your renter must meet the income requirements and pay at least one utility bill.
Why does Calgary need this program?
1 in 7 Calgary households struggle to pay their utility bills, forcing some homeowners and renters to choose between heating their homes and buying groceries or other necessities. This is known as energy inequity. Energy inequity impacts some people more than others, especially low-income households, racialized groups, renters, seniors, Indigenous people, and lone parents.
This program is developed in alignment with Calgary’s Energy Equity Strategy, which aims to help Calgarians affordably heat, cool, and power their homes. By addressing these challenges, the program seeks to ensure that all residents can live comfortably without compromising their essential needs.
Why should I participate
We can help you save money by teaching you simple ways to reduce your home's gas, electricity and water use. Upgrading home features like LED lighting, good insulation, efficient furnaces, and high-efficiency toilets, your home will cost less to power, heat and maintain. Whether the changes are small or large, our goal is to improve the comfort, health and safety of your home, support your mental and physical wellbeing, and contribute to Calgary’s climate goals!
